Ubuntu Creations
Garden & Crafts
'I am what I am because of who we all are'
Introduction
Eden Protocol is proud to launch its pilot program in partnership with Isalathiso Primary School in Mossel Bay — a vibrant school community of over 1,300 students. This partnership forms the foundation for a long-term initiative to create lasting, sustainable change through food security, creativity, and youth empowerment. With a dedicated team and an inspirational school leadership, Isalathiso offers a powerful platform to refine and replicate this model across other communities and schools in South Africa.
-
Ubuntu Creations is the heart of this initiative — a program that merges gardening, arts, crafts, and entrepreneurship under one vision: to grow young leaders who serve their community. The garden project enhances the school’s existing feeding scheme by sustainably producing nutritious food to nourish students’ bodies and brains. At the same time, the arts and crafts curriculum is elevated into a commercial-level program, teaching students how to turn creative skills into real-world business ventures. Ubuntu Creations is a movement of growth — from seed to skill, from classroom to community.
-
The program is implemented using the school’s grounds and infrastructure to establish thriving gardens and dedicated learning spaces. Local experts in agriculture, crafts, business, and entrepreneurship are brought in to mentor both students and teachers. These mentors not only teach hands-on skills but also build confidence and long-term capacity, ensuring that the next generation can take ownership and lead with vision. The goal is to create a fully integrated model where food production, creativity, education, and enterprise work together to uplift the school and its surrounding community.
-
This project is rooted in real community needs and driven by those who know it best. Its success lies in its deep local connection — listening first, then acting with purpose. It isn’t about flashy, short-term aid; it's about building lasting, culturally respectful, and sustainable solutions. With an already functioning feeding scheme and a strong craft foundation, Isalathiso is an ideal launchpad. The program strengthens what's already in place and surrounds it with mentorship, resources, and a scalable model that puts the youth at the center of community development.
-
Once established at Isalathiso, the program will follow the students into local high schools, ensuring continuity in education and support through their formative years. From there, it will expand into the greater community, using the proven model to upskill adults, create local job opportunities, and build micro-enterprises. As the impact grows, the initiative will be introduced to surrounding towns and regions, laying the groundwork for national expansion — all driven by local ownership, youth leadership, and sustainable economic models.
How you can help!
We’re looking for passionate partners to grow Ubuntu Creations. Whether you are a business, expert, donor, educator, or storyteller, your involvement can help expand this program’s reach and impact. We need gardening and craft mentors, curriculum developers, marketing partners, and business leaders to help bring the students’ products and produce to market.
Together, we can create a model that not only feeds bodies and minds — but also builds a future where youth lead the way in transforming their communities from the inside out.
